Beginners Guide to Sub-Ohm Vaping

Quick Links

So, you're thinking of Sub-Ohm vaping?

So, you’ve started vaping, and all is good, but you’ve seen people passing you in the street using bigger electronic cigarettes that produce more vapour compared to your vape pens, and you wonder how they’re doing it?

Welcome to your entry into the world of sub-ohm vaping!

This article will answer some of your most pressing questions and help you choose whether starting or upgrading your vape kit to a sub-ohm vaping kit is the right move for you. However, before we go into that, we all know these products are not intended for use by anyone under 18. Either way, when you decide, please make sure you’re well educated and clear in your mind as to what sub-ohm vaping is.

Mouth To Lung- Direct To Lung

Styles of vaping explained.

The starter vape kits are generally smaller and more basic, whilst the starter e-liquids used with them have a higher PG content.

The Sub-Ohm/DTL style is where you take a long inhale, and you inhale directly into your lungs. The Sub-Ohm vape kits tend to be bigger, have various controls for tanks, coils, and airflows, and larger.

The E-liquid used with them is generally higher in VG (Vegetable Glycerine) and lower in nicotine. The higher VG content allows for the bigger clouds, which vapers should use with a lower nicotine level due to the amount of vapour produced.

So these are the main differences between MTL and DTL vaping, and it comes down to personal preference which one of these styles you prefer.

Why would I Sub-Ohm Vape?

A sub-ohm e-cig kit has two main features that could make this a good idea.

  • More vapour – Greater cloud making capacity
  • more flavour – Intensified e-liquid flavours.

To produce larger clouds, you will need to consider the VG/PG ratio, which is different for each person. Higher VG liquids are smoother on the inhale, whereas PG increases throat hit in your vape juice.

You may also note different terminologies surrounding the vape world. For example, although Sub-Ohm kits produce more intense flavours and larger amounts of vapour, they use more e-liquid than MTL kits due to higher power vaporising the liquid at a higher temperature.

This causes the coils to be changed sooner. Sub-ohm kits use a different vaping technique to MTL. They produce more vapour due to the higher temperature and larger surface area of e-liquid being vaporised, on average producing between 4-5 times more vapour than an MTL vape pen.

How do I Sub-Ohm?

Recommend Starter Vaping Kits and tips.

So you’ve decided to try sub-ohm vaping. Congratulations! You might be wondering how to do it and what the best kit for a first-timer is.

What kind of kits should I use?

There are many Sub-Ohm kits available and some kits that can achieve both MTL and Subohm vaping. However, the kits we recommend at Herbaltides are the Freemax Maxus Kit, the Voopoo Argus GT kit or the Geekvape Aegis Legend 2 Mod with the Geekvape Z-max tank. Whatever kit you choose, take note of the following tips below.

Here are 8 tips on getting started

  1. Always buy devices that have low ohms reading (less than 1 ohm in general). 30 watts of power or more will also give you a good experience with sub-ohm vaping.
  2. If you smoke, MTL kits may suit your needs better before starting with Sub-Ohm kits. Once you’re confident enough, go ahead and give it a shot!
  3. Don’t forget that this device requires more responsibility than other types; it can cause fires or injuries if not used properly.
  4. Don’t overheat your coils. It’s important to check for dry hits, or you could end up with a burnt taste in your mouth and a coil that burns out fast!
  5. Sub-ohm tanks are not recommended for first-time users either.
  6. If you’re using an unregulated box mod, it’s best to have the batteries charged at all times (at least 50% battery life).
  7. Always use high VG e-liquid on these devices; don’t use anything lower than 70VG/30PG.
  8. Keep your vape kit away from children and pets – and always follow warnings when using the device.

Is Sub-Ohm Vaping right for you?

If you want to know if sub-ohm vaping is right for you, give it a try!

Many things make this vaping different. Some people may not like the amount of vapour that these e-cigarettes produce, and no, this does not mean that you should disregard using a sub-ohm vaping device.

A quick recap on MTL vs DTL (SubOhm)

Starter Vape Kits – MTL

  • Most resembles smoking a cigarette
  • Not overly complicated
  • Longer lasting coils
  • Costs less
  • Smaller

Sub Ohm Vape kits – DTL

  • More intense flavour
  • Larger and denser vapour production
  • Ability to control the intensity of the inhale by increasing decreasing power output
  • A larger choice of flavours
